A great variety of operating systems are available based on the pairing of the GNU platforms toolsets and libraries, and the Linux kernel. These various releases are called 'distributions' or 'distros'.

GNU/Linux is usually controlled using a shell, while graphical applications can run on top of a graphics server and window manager.
